Who We Are

Broken Waters

We are a non-profit group, based in Sacramento, California. Formed to support our fellow man, and encourage them to rise up in this life, and in their walk with our Lord, Jesus Christ.

The CR Mission

We all have hurts, habits and hang-ups that burden our hearts and minds. That is why we are proud to focus on supporting Celebrate Recovery - a faith based, 12 step program that really works.

We currently support a growing circle of churches in the Sacramento area with our premier worship band - the South Bound Resurrection Band. A powerful mix of rock, blues and worship, the band performs in support of CR groups throughout the Sacramento area, which otherwise may not have live worship music.

Our Mission

We have long range goals of mentoring our youth, so many of whom are damaged and in need of purpose. Using music to help lift, encourage, and bring them closer to Christ for nourishing and healing.

Using this as a base to grow more like-minded musicians, we can expand our music ministry to more and more CR groups throughout Northern California and beyond.

About The Band

South-Bound Resurrection Band

Biography

The South-Bound Resurrection Band is made up of a bunch of misfits and outcasts who love the Lord and like having a good time. The band is made up of Dave Oliveri on acoustic drums, Shawn Bryson on electric drums, Daniel Norris on congas, Randy Bryson on lead guitar and background vocals, Jordan Reading on bass and background vocals, Steven Hall on bass and keys, and finally Paul Nagel on 12-string guitar and lead vocals.

The style of the band is like old-school rock & roll meets praise and worship with a south of the border twist. Some of our musical influences include Santana, Bad Company, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pink Floyd, The Eagles, Dire Straits, Boston, Kansas and others. We love to take existing praise music, add our own flavor and then let it loose on the Celebrate Recovery scene.

The band started out as an extended Saturday jam session around 2011 with guys within the recovery movement who loved to hang out, talk and play music loudly. The original idea was to get folks together to have a good time, connect and form musical groups based on musical style. We eventually rented a church in Rancho Cordova that would let us “turn it up” and get a little rowdy.

We’ve had a lot of musicians come thorough and jam with us but the guys who consistently stuck around were Dan, Randy, Shawn, Dave O, Jordan and Paul. We were invited to play a few years ago at the Bridgeway recovery group which allowed us to try out different things and really develop our style. We took a break in 2015 and focused on supporting each other both emotionally and musically. In January of 2015 Randy was diagnosed with stage-4 leukemia and was given only a few weeks to live. At that point the music became a source of encouragement against a bleak backdrop. Randy endured several rounds of chemotherapy and has now been diagnosed as cancer free. During Randy’s recovery we kept telling him that we need him around to play his “Dire Straits” leads. Praise God! what a miracle, we indeed serve a risen savior.

In August of 2015 Paul’s daughter was diagnosed with bulimia and entered treatment. Later in August Paul’s son was diagnosed with anorexia and also entered treatment. It was discovered during treatment that Paul’s son had been struggling with gender dysphoria issues which were driving the anorexia. As Christian parents, Paul and his wife are working through issues in recovery they could have never anticipated. The guys and the music have been an enormous source of support.

The name “South-Bound Resurrection Band” came about over the course of a few months and conveys significant meaning in our personal lives. Dan liked the sound of “South-Bound” and was floating all kinds of ideas around it. It seemed like there was a deeper meaning behind the term “South-Bound”, almost like a metaphor for death. The name was incomplete according to what the scriptures portray about Christ. They state He is our great healer, physician, rescuer, lover of us at the core of who we are.

The scriptures also state that God’s desire for our lives is for healing, wholeness, well-being, relational closeness to Him and others. To sum it up would be total restoration of mind, soul and spirit which seems like a metaphor for resurrection and is Christ’s only solution for death.

“South-Bound Resurrection Band” seemed like a perfect name for our recovery band because in recovery we have experienced many forms of death all around us: physical, emotional and spiritual. We also find in the scriptures many patterns of death of the old and resurrection to the new. If that is the case, then we, just like the characters of old can have hope that Christ is working resurrection power in the death we are experiencing to produce restoration, wholeness and newness of life in our current experience. The only requirement is that we surrender control of our lives to our higher power, Jesus Christ.
